British Rowing is working closely with AOC (Association of Colleges) to raise the profile of indoor rowing through the Go Row Indoor programme

There are three key areas in which British’s Rowing Go Row Indoor programme is currently supporting the college sector:

Go Row Indoor Workshop training for colleges

Go Row Indoor offers college fitness professional training providers a REPS and CIMPSA accredited workshop that will teach college student instructors how to deliver a world class indoor rowing offer simply and effectively.

The workshop is highly recommended for entrants into the World Skills Fitness Instructor Competition, in which indoor rowing is a key discipline. Workshops are delivered by a fully trained British Rowing Master Trainer and can be tailored to your college needs, taking account of class timetables, venue, and class size and equipment availability.

WorldSkills UK Fitness Trainer Competition

The WorldSkills UK Fitness Trainer Competition is the only WorldSkills UK competition – of a suite of more than 55 competitions – in the active leisure industry, and the only skills competition for students in the UK working towards qualifications in the fitness industry, regardless of where and with which institution they study. The competition challenges aspiring fitness professionals’ skills on industry-driven criteria – developed by a professional technical experts group under the direction of Head Judge Karen Stanton – and allowing them to demonstrate that they have more to give to prospective employers than just their qualification. Indoor Rowing is one of the key judged disciplines of the competition linked to Go Row Indoor Fitness Instructor training.

Every year British Rowing works closely with the event organisers to help develop new heat and finalist tasks, the indoor rowing judging criteria, and providing training opportunities, support and advice for student competitors taking part in the competition.  If your college is entering this year and would like some advice around the indoor rowing elements of the event, please email for more information.

Online challenges

AoC Sport and British Rowing deliver a yearly online indoor rowing challenge activation for both college staff and students across the UK. The challenges are headed under the title Go Row Indoor College Challenge and are a fun, new way to engage students to get active with their peers and understand the key health and wellbeing benefits indoor rowing has to offer as a full body fitness workout.

It is fantastic way for students to take part in an organised virtual competition, with prizes to be won and the opportunity for participants to take part at a time to suit them over a specified timeframe. Students can easily access machines at college or in their local gyms – it’s free to enter, and only requires one rowing machine and small amount of time to complete. More information of future challenges will be available through AoC Sport and British Rowing news pages when they launch.
