He rowed to top spot in the time trial in 4:46.25 on the beautiful blue-green water of the Lake in Aiguebelette which is part of the Savoie region. He has now qualified direct into Saturday’s final.ADVERT Rachel Morris was also a Paralympic Champion in Beijing but in the sport of cycling in which she also took a road race bronze in 2012. Since then she has transferred to rowing and has made remarkable progress in training. Today she was making her world cup debut and ran top Russian, Natalia Bolshakova, close in the time trial heats before finishing second in a time of 5:33.59. With only one boat qualifying for Saturday’s final, Morris now races a repechage tomorrow. The GB para-rowing mixed coxed four – in which Grace Clough made her world cup debut alongside 2013 World Champions Pam Relph, Oliver Hester, James Fox and cox Oliver James – were fastest finishers in their preliminary race in a time of 3:31.12 and are now through to Saturday’s finals. Tomorrow’s racing will include 19 GB Rowing Team crews. All will race a time-trial instead of the more usual side-by-side heats as the sport’s world governing body uses this event to test the system which could be used in the case of adverse weather and any of the top events. Racing starts at 8.35am (UK Time) and will run until the conclusion of the para-rowing repechages at 6.47pm. There will be live race-tracker coverage at www.worldrowing.com The GB ROWING TEAM para-rowing squad is supported by GUIDE DOGS. SCROLL DOWN FOR MORE ================================================= LAURENCE NEEDS A GOOD WOMAN Whilst his squad-mates are in France and already racing at the first World Cup of the season, the GB Rowing Team’s Laurence Whiteley is home alone and training solo. The talented para-rower is no slouch. He won two golds at the Varese International Regatta earlier this season in his single. He has relocated from the North-east to the GB Rowing Team’s centralised training centre at Caversham, near Reading, to give himself the best possible chance of success. If Laurence is to achieve his dream and row at Rio 2016, though, the only boat class open to Laurence is a mixed double scull. So, he needs to find a woman in the right disability classification and to find one soon. “Every day I focus on each training session and Rio is what it’s all about. That’s the motivation to push myself day in and day out. The Paralympic Games are what we all strive for”, said Whiteley recently. Louise Kingsley, the GB Rowing Team’s para-rowing manager, said that the squad is looking for a female whose impairment precludes them being able to bend their knee and/or ankle: “To be considered to join Laurence, potential para-rowers don’t need to have rowed before or have any knowledge of rowing. But they need to want to be fit, to enjoy training and working hard. We can teach them everything else”. He will race in the lightweight men’s single scull just after finishing his final exams in dentistry. Zak doubles up as a spare for the other lightweight sculling boats. He is a graduate of the renowned GB Rowing Team Start programme which identifies potential future champions.
