Multiple Wins for Nottingham Rowing Club at British Rowing Masters

Nottingham Rowing Club report on their success at the British Rowing Masters Championships…

The British Rowing Masters Championships, formerly known as the National Veterans Championships, were held over 1000 metres on Sunday 13th June at the Holme Pierrepont regatta lake and attracted a record entry of 539 crews. The racing took in the whole range of June weather, from a damp and chilly start through some warm spells of sun, to an early evening downpour.

In view of Henley Women’s Regatta, Nottingham Rowing Club’s women only entered two races, but won them both against tough fields. Athalie Redwood-Brown claimed the first gold of the day for the club, winning a hard-fought final of the Women’s Masters A (age 27+) singles after opening the days racing with a win in the heats to take the gold from a field of seven.

Not to be outdone were the Women’s Masters B (average age 36+) eight of Netty Cox, Ruth Hyde, Lou Townrow, Lisa Bailey, Sarah Royles, Cassie White, Katherine Wiley and Zara Muirhead-Smith, coxed by Ashley Hewitt. Although they faced former World Masters medallists in the fast-starting field of five crews, the NRC crew held their nerve and pushed through the pack to the front. They took the gold by a length from the other crews, who were left to battle for the silver.

In the men’s races, Graham Angus and Chris Beesley won bronze in the D (average age 50+) double sculls, while Peter Massey, Bill Payne, Stuart Wharton and Carl Unwin overcame the rain as well as their opponents to win gold for the Nottingham Rowing Club/Nottingham & Union composite in the H/I quads (average age 70+).
